Google Cloud Next 2019 Recap: CEO Thomas Kurian Makes His Debut, Announces New Hybrid, Multi-Cloud Service

Partners tell CRNtv that Google Cloud’s new hybrid, multi-cloud service Anthos is a powerful tool that will make them more competitive.

Google Cloud’s Next conference is back in San Francisco and this time with a new lead.

Just 10 weeks into the job, CEO Thomas Kurian, a former Oracle executive, took the stage and immediately got down to business. He discussed Anthos, Google Cloud’s new hybrid cloud platform for managing applications that also works across rival public clouds.

“It takes a very bold move to come up with Anthos, which in essence let’s customers take their solutions and package them in a way that they can be transported to any cloud provider or stay on-premise,” said Dana Berg, COO of North Hollywood, Calif.-based SADA Systems, named Google Cloud Global Reseller Partner of the Year.

It all comes as Google fights to climb the ladder in cloud, an industry in which Amazon Web Services is the clear leader, followed by Microsoft Azure. To win over more enterprise customers, Kurian made it clear that he’ll be borrowing a couple of pages from Oracle’s playbook. He plans to beef up Google’s sales force and lean into its partner base.

“To make it easy for customers to do business with us, we’re introducing a variety of different things: simplified pricing, easier contracting, co-innovation frameworks, where we can work with you and our partners,” Kurian told the audience on Tuesday.

Other news on Tuesday centered around Google’s commitment to open source. Google announced open source strategic partnerships with MongoDB, RedisLabs, Elastic, DATASTAX, Neo4J, InfluxData and Confluent.
