Data lake platform developer Qubole has been acquired by Idera, a Houston-based marketer of database design and management tools.

Qubole’s software will become part of Idera’s Database Tools business unit, according to a statement from Idera. The acquisition price was not disclosed.

Qubole, founded in 2011 and based in Santa Clara, Calif., developed the Qubole Open Data Lake Platform for machine learning, streaming data and ad hoc analytics tasks. Since its founding the company had raised a total of $77.9 million in multiple rounds of financing, according to the Crunchbase website.

Qubole has been included on the CRN Big Data 100 list in recent years. In July the company debuted a new release of its software and announced an extended alliance with data integration software developer Informatica – both with the intent of simplifying some of the complex processes around constructing, managing and utilizing data lakes.

Data lakes are huge stores of unorganized data, usually unstructured data that can’t be easily managed by traditional relational database systems.

Idera operates three product divisions: database tools, developer tools and DevOps tools. The company offers an extensive portfolio of database design and modeling tools (ER/Studio Data Architect, Aqua Data Studio and Rapid SQL), database performance monitoring tools (SQL Diagnostic manager for SQL Server and for MySQL, DB Optimizer and SQL Enterprise Job Manager), and database protection (SQL Compliance Manager, SQL Secure and DBArtisan).

The addition of the Qubole Open Data Lake Platform to Idera’s software portfolio will provide a way for that company to expand into big data applications and cloud computing.

“Companies generate and store both structured and unstructured data at unprecedented levels,” said Randy Jacobs, Idera CEO, in a statement. “Qubole’s reputation as the leading cross-platform solution focused on unstructured data is a fantastic addition to Idera’s Database Tools division. In particular, it will pair well with Idera’s WhereScape business, the leading provider of data automation solutions for data warehouses.”

The acquisition announcement came as Qubole held an online Data Lake Summit this week and Qubole executives could not be reached for additional information or comment. As of press time Qubole had not issued its own statement about the acquisition, providing instead a link on its home page to the Idera press statement.
