Twitter Outage Affects Users In U.S., Europe

Users were not able to load or post tweets as thousands reported issues with the platform. The social media giant said it was investigating the cause but there was “no evidence of a security breach or hack.”

Twitter was experiencing an outage for many users in parts of the U.S. and Europe on Thursday, which the social media giant said it was investigating but added there was “no evidence of a security breach or hack.”

According to DownDetector.com, which tracks outages across the internet, the outage affected more than 22,000 users on the social media platform around 5:30 p.m. ET. and rose to more than 59,000 shortly after 6 p.m. By 6:30 p.m. ET, tweets began appearing as normal but users were still experiencing problems.

It appeared that users were not able to post tweets or load the site or app.

“Honestly, thank god,” one post read on DownDetector.com. “I hate twitter but I hate that it‘s not working,” another commenter posted.

“We know people are having trouble Tweeting and using Twitter,” a Twitter spokeswoman told CRN in an email. “We have no evidence of a security breach or hack, and we‘re currently investigating internal causes. We’re working to fix this issue as quickly as possible. We’ll share more when we have it and Tweet from @TwitterSupport once we can – stay tuned.”

The San Francisco-based social media company has experienced occasional outages before. This past February, the service suffered a partial outage that affected some users’ ability to send tweets.
