Shipments of PCs from Apple and Dell grew in the U.S. during the second quarter of the year, even as overall shipments in the country declined due to component shortages, according to research firm Gartner.

Mac manufacturer Apple jumped into the No. 3 spot for U.S. PC market share—dropping Lenovo to No. 4 in the market—while No. 2 Dell came within a percentage point of No. 1 HP Inc. for the second quarter in a row, the research firm reported.

Apple saw U.S. shipments climb 4.4 percent during the second quarter, year over year, Gartner said. The company unveiled a redesigned iMac desktop featuring the tech giant’s M1 processor in April, and has recently reported strong demand for its M1-powered versions of the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

The growth gave Apple a 16.1-percent share of the market during the second quarter, surpassing Lenovo’s 13.8-percent share. Lenovo’s U.S. shipments fell 9.2 percent, according to Gartner.

Meanwhile, Dell again came in just shy of HP Inc. during the quarter for U.S. PC shipments, with Dell’s shipments growing 2.3 percent for market share of 27.7 percent. HP’s market share for the quarter was 28.4 percent, as U.S. shipments dropped 13.5 percent, Gartner reported.

Gartner’s PC shipments figures do not include Chromebooks or Apple iPads.

Here are Gartner‘s U.S. PC market-share figures for the second quarter of 2021:

- HP Inc.: market share of 28.4 percent, down from 31.6 percent a year ago

- Dell: market share of 27.7 percent, up from 26.1 percent a year ago

- Apple: market share of 16.1 percent, up from 14.8 percent a year ago

- Lenovo: market share of 13.8 percent, down from 14.6 percent a year ago

- Microsoft: market share of 4.3 percent, down from 4.6 percent a year ago

Overall, U.S. PC shipments slipped by 3.7 percent during Q2, a stark reversal from the 24.1-percent growth in the market during the first quarter of the year.

The drop was “primarily” the result of component shortages, Gartner said.

“The global semiconductor shortage and subsequent component supply constraints have extended lead time for some enterprise mobile PC models to as long as 120 days,” said Mikako Kitagawa, research director at Gartner, in a news release.

Apple benefited from its strength in consumer PCs, Gartner said. “The consumer PC market was less impacted by shortages than the enterprise market, as vendors can be more flexible in the system design of consumer models, enabling workarounds for certain supply constraints,” the research firm said in its news release.

The component issues have resulted in increased prices, which vendors have passed on to customers, Kitagawa said.

“Moving forward, rising prices could continue to slow PC demand through the next 6 to 12 months,” she said.

Earlier on Monday, after research firm IDC reported global PC figures and pointed to “early indicators of consumer demand slowing down,” shares in Dell and HP fell several percentage points. HP’s stock price closed down 2.76 percent for the day, to $29.21 a share, while Dell dropped 3.11 percent to close at $97.13 a share.
