WATCH: VMworld Partner Perspective With Faction’s John Drake

VMware’s “asset light” strategy is resonating well with partners like Faction, one of the premier VMware Cloud On AWS managed service providers and a multi-cloud market leader.

“It really allows for clients to focus on the technology stack and focus on the differentiating technology pieces and move away from the on-premise, software, management piece of things,” said John Drake, vice president of strategic alliances. The asset light model aims to help partners expand multi-cloud opportunities by letting partners integrate new VMware offerings into their own managed services portfolio.

Drake updated CRNtv on Faction’s relationship with VMware during the virtualization company’s annual conference in Las Vegas, VMworld 2018. Specifically, he said the deepened relationship between Amazon and VMware is a major plus for his team.

“Bringing the elasticity of Amazon Web Services and AWS Cloud to native VMware environment is huge,” he said. “Being able to take advantage of that as a VMware customer and adopter is great. So they can now take advantage of the elasticity, scale up and scale down and build a solution that’s next generation.”

The companies unveiled Amazon RDS on VMware on Monday, which they say will make it as easy to set up, operate, and scale databases on-premises and in hybrid environments as it is in AWS. VMware is also cutting the price of VMware Cloud on AWS in half in a market-shaking move that partners predict will result in a cloud computing channel windfall.

VMware also doubled down on its strategy for a Virtual Cloud Network at the show, delivering new innovations across the VMware NSX networking and security portfolio. The enhancements aim to further the company's strategy of enabling consistent, pervasive connectivity and intrinsic security for applications and data across any environment.

“If we look at what VMware is able to do on the networking side of the house, it’s just enabling so much more portability of the workloads and it’s enabling things to be so much more flexible,” said Drake. “It’s allowing us to do easier and faster deployment for our clients. So, it’s really a great enabling technology.”
