The Leaders In Servers

Hewlett Packard Enterprise sold the most server units through the channel during the second quarter of 2018, according to second quarter 2018 data from Port Washington, N.Y.-based The NPD Group. The NPD Group tracks monthly technology sales-out information from the largest IT distributors and resellers in North America, down to the item level and with overlap removed.

A total of 107,199 server units were sold in the second quarter, down from 112,334 units during the same quarter one year ago, representing a 5 percent drop year over year. Here's a look at the top five server leaders by brand that sold the most server units from April to June 2018.

Unit Share: 69.4%

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based vendor sold a total of 74,432 server units during the quarter, down 2 percent year over year. HPE captured total unit share at 69.4 percent, up from the 67.7 percent unit share it captured in second quarter 2017. HPE's BTO ProLiant was the highest selling server line in the industry, according to NPD, with the DL360 G9 model being the top selling product in the quarter.

Dell

Unit Share: 11.6%

Dell took home the silver medal in the second quarter, selling a total of 12,429 server units, up a whopping 39 percent year over year. The Round Rock, Texas-based infrastructure giant was the only vendor to sell more units in second quarter 2018 compared to the same quarter one year ago. Dell captured 11.6 percent unit share, up from 8 percent share in second quarter 2017.

Lenovo

Unit Share: 8.7%

Lenovo came in third place in terms of the amount of server units sold through the largest distributors and resellers in North America, selling a total of 9,322 units, down from the 11,106 units it sold in second quarter 2017. The Hong Kong-based vendor captured 8.7 percent unit share, representing a 1.2 point decrease from the 9.9 percent share Lenovo had in second quarter 2017.

Cisco

Unit Share: 4.7%

The San Jose, Calif.-based networking giant place fourth, selling a total of 5,703 server units during the quarter, representing a 53 percent unit decrease year over year. The drop made Cisco's unit share fall from 9.6 percent in second quarter 2017, to 4.7 percent unit share this quarter.

Supermicro Computer

Unit Share: 1.6%

Supermicro Computer sold a total of 1,757 server units during the second quarter, down 31 percent compared to the 2,544 units it sold in the same quarter one year ago. The San Jose, Calif.-based company captured 1.6 percent unit share, representing a slight drop from the 2.3 percent share it held in second quarter 2017.
